The art of painting light, shades, reflexions.
Claude Monets painting «impression, soleil levant», gave «impressionism» its name. It wasn’t the object anymore, which interested the impressionists the most. Light, shades, reflexions, haziness, transformations fascinated the painters. Painting what the eye, the retina “sees” was essential – and no more, what the brain made out of it.
